Marianne Rinaldo Woods, Ph.D., J.D., is the Academic Program Director for the Master of Science Degree in Research Administration and a faculty member in the Department of Government at the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, Advanced Academic Programs at Johns Hopkins University.


Formerly, Dr. Woods was the Senior Associate Vice President for Research at The University of Texas at San Antonio (emeritus) and taught in the College of Public Policy.  As the Senior Associate Vice President for Research Dr. Woods worked as the Chief Officer for the Division of Research reporting to the Provost and was responsible for oversight of all aspects of research including Sponsored Programs (pre and post award); Research Integrity; Research Compliance; Research Support; Data Management and Security; Classified Research; Export Controls; Contract and Industrial Agreements; and Commercialization, Technology Transfer and Innovation. She was also responsible for the development and implementation of university-wide policies and procedures ranging from conflict of interest to intellectual property. She worked extensively, ranging from policy to SOPs in building a top animal facility and receiving AALAC accreditation. Dr. Woods also served as the Research Integrity Officer for the University and was the Institutional Official with oversight of the IACUC, IRB, Conflict of Interest in Research, Intellectual Property, and the Institutional Biosafety Committees. Prior to UTSA Dr. Woods was Associate Vice President for Research at the University of Alabama.   While at Alabama she managed all research including pre and post sponsored programs and research accounting. 


Dr. Woods has also served several times as the Chair of the IRB, Chair of the IACUC, Chair of the Intellectual Property Committee and Chair of the Biosafety Committee. She has also been chair of many faculty committees including the F&A Faculty Review Committee and Center Director Committees. 


Nationally Dr. Woods is currently the Co-chair of the NCURA Research Management Journal and has served on numerous regional and national NCURA Committees. Formerly, Dr. Woods served on the Board of Directors of NCURA, the NCURA National Select Committee on Global Affairs and the NCURA National Committee on Professional Development. She also served six years on the Board of Directors of the Council on Governmental Relations (COGR) and was a member of the Contracts and Intellectual Property Committee. Dr. Woods also served two terms on the Board of Directors the University Industry Demonstration Partnership (UIDP), an organization created out of the National Academy of Science (NAS) and was a member of the NAS University Industry Research Roundtable. She has served as the University Administrative Representative to the Federal Demonstration Partnership and was Chair of the Export Controls Working Group. In addition, she is a former Chair and Chair Elect of NCURA Region V.

  

Dr. Woods is the 2009 recipient of NCURA’s highest honor, the Achievement in Research Administration Award. She is also the recipient of NCURA’s National Distinguished Service Award and NCURA’s Region V Distinguished Service Award. In 2015 she received the Johns Hopkins University Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence. In 2016 Dr. Woods was the recipient of the ARMS/NCURA Fellowship at the University of Melbourne, Melbourne, AU. Dr. Woods was one of the recipients of the 2006 Licensing Executive Society’s National Deal of Distinction Award. She is a past member of the Board of Directors of the Texas Society for Biomedical Research and Past President of the Texas Technology Transfer Association (T3A). Dr. Woods also served as the President of Society of Research Administrators Texas Chapter. 


Dr. Woods is a member of NCURA’s Peer Review Program and a Founding Committee Member for the general peer review standards, the clinical research and clinical trials standards, and the research compliance standards. Dr. Woods currently also serves NCURA as the Co-editor of the Research Management Journal. She is a former lead faculty an NCURA faculty member in SPA II, on NCURA’s Departmental Research Administration Workshop, Research Fundamentals, and Export Control & Embargo Workshop and Webinars.  Dr. Woods was lead and appeared several times on NCURA TV. She is also the former co-editor of the NCURA Newsletter, former member of NCURA’s Professional Development Committee, its Membership Committee, and a former member, both elected and Presidential appointee, of NCURA’s Board of Directors. She is a founding member of the Peer Review Standards for Academic Institutions and Medical Institutions. 


Dr. Woods has also worked with the FBI, most recently as a member of the FBI Citizens Board of Directors. She has classified clearance and is a member of InfraGuard. She has also served on the Steering Committee for EPSCoR Alabama. 


A renowned international and national speaker, Dr. Woods has presented in many venues and on all aspects of research administration. She has conducted many workshops, concurrent sessions, and discussion groups for NCURA and other professional associations.  She has published recently in the Society of Research Administrator journal and the NCURA Magazine.
