Carpantato (Tanta) Myles joined The University of Alabama (UA) in January 2005 as the University’s first research compliance officer where she oversees all research compliance related areas for the Division of Research including Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), Institutional Review Board (IRB), Institutional Biological Safety Committee (IBC), Animal Care, Conflict of Interest, Scientific Misconduct, Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR), and Export Control. In 2007, she was promoted to the position of director of the Office for Research Compliance (ORC). Prior to joining UA, she served as the special assistant to the vice-president for research where she oversaw administration and operational support services/programs for the Office of Vice-President for Research. She gained extensive experience in safety regulation compliance including radiation safety, laboratory safety, human anatomical specimens and controlled substances.

Under Ms. Myles leadership the ORC obtained accreditation of its Human Research Protection Program from the Association for the Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs making UA only the second university in the state of Alabama to obtain full accreditation. This accreditation assists UA in demonstrating the overall excellence of its research program by providing the most comprehensive protections for research participants. The office has also maintained accreditation of its Animal Research Program from the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC) demonstrating UA’s commitment to responsible animal care and use.

Beginning with the Human Research Protection Program and the Institutional Review Boards (IRB), research compliance committees have been subject to a Six-Sigma review and refinement of compliance practices – to better streamline processes and throughput. This systematic approach to process improvement has helped move UA ahead of national benchmarks. Additional initiatives led by Ms. Myles include implementation of the current updated version of the online submission system for both animal subject and human subject research, and co-hosting two Regional Connections Meetings for IRB Administrators with Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research (PRIM&R).

Ms. Myles received her B.S. in Biology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and her M.S. in Business Management from Troy University. She has also obtained certification as a Six-Sigma Greenbelt, Certified IRB Manager (CIM) and Certified IRB Professional (CIP). She has co-authored several research articles and abstracts, instructed numerous collegiate science courses and laboratory sessions, as well as presented and co-presented several workshops and concurrent training sessions. She has served as a member of the Counsel on Governmental Relations (COGR) research compliance and administration committee. She is also active in several professional organizations, including the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS), National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA), Public Responsibility in Medicine and Research (PRIM&R).
