Join us for this special one-day symposium, designed specifically for pre- and post-award directors in research administration, and go on a journey of discovery and collaboration. For leaders who are keen to network, share creative ideas, and keep current on the changing pre- and post-award operations landscape and methods that coworkers in those jobs can exercise to forge a stronger relationship between one another, we encourage you to attend. This symposium will offer an opportunity for discussions where leaders and esteemed colleagues come together to exchange ideas and discuss ways that pre- and post-award administrators can enhance their working relationship with each other. Take advantage of this exceptional opportunity to connect with colleagues, collaborate on solutions, and broaden your career horizons. The approach of this event requires registration of a two-person team of leaders (one pre-and post-award director from the same organization).
Objectives:

1. Develop shared understandings and deeper relationships within the pre- and post-award administration team
2. Understand Emerging Trends – gain insights from pre- and post-award leaders regarding emerging trends they are seeing specific to the team they lead.
3. Share Best Practices – as technology continues to evolve and we seek to work smarter and not harder, we will have an opportunity to learn from the experiences and strategies for implementing best practices from pre- and post-award leaders representing a variety of organization types.
4. Enhance Collaboration – augment skills and strategies that foster an environment of teamwork and collaboration between pre- and post-award staff.
5. Actionable Insights – learn what practical tools and strategies to pursue within the operations you lead aiding you in developing an action plan to implement improvements within the organizations you represent to enhance collaboration between pre- and post-award leaders.

Meet the Presenters! NCURA Pre- and Post- Award Directors Symposium: Leading Together

 

Dr. Kris Monahan

NCURA’s 2024 President
Senior Director of Sponsored Projects and Research Compliance
Providence College


She established a sponsored research office at Providence College in 2011. Prior to Providence College, she led pre-award activities at one of the largest gender-focused research-and-action organizations in the world, Wellesley Centers for Women at Wellesley College. She also served as assistant then interim director of sponsored programs at a comprehensive state university in Massachusetts, Bridgewater State University.

With an MPA and Ph.D. in education policy, Kris is keenly skilled in understanding complex business processes, teaching, learning, and education administration. Her career has focused on developing training programs, services and communication related to pre- and post-award research administration. She has effectively developed policies and standard operating procedures for colleges/universities. She has experience working directly with faculty on proposal development to working with the highest level of institutional administration on strategic plans and college-wide research initiatives and policies. She has experience with the administration of three different Institutional Review Boards, has led the establishment of an inaugural Indirect Cost Rate Agreement and developed course-release policies.

Having presented more than 60 concurrent sessions and discussion groups at regional and national meetings of NCURA, Kris is well known for her focus on supporting research development, growth, and faculty service. She served as co-editor of the NCURA Magazine 2013-2016, has served on the NCURA Board of Directors, is a past Chair of NCURA Region 1 and been on numerous regional and national committees bringing her extensive perspective to activities, services, and programs of NCURA and in support of the profession of research administration. She has authored numerous articles and publications related to research administration.

 

 

Tim Schailey

Assistant Vice President of Research Support Services
Thomas Jefferson University


Tim Schailey is the Assistant Vice President of Research Support Services at Thomas Jefferson University. He oversees all pre‐award, non‐financial post‐award, contracts, outreach and education, and export controls. He has been involved with the National Council of University Research Administrators (NCURA) since 2008. He has attended NCURA‐sponsored meetings nationally and regionally, where he recognizes the benefits/knowledge he could absorb from his colleagues at those meetings. Tim has served in various roles at regional and national levels to give back to the organization. He is a graduate of NCURA’s Executive Leadership Program (ELP), which prepared him to take a leadership role at the national level while recognizing the best practices of volunteer leadership.

Additionally, he serves as the Treasurer of the national organization, Chair of the Financial Management Committee (FMC), and as a member of NCURA’s Board of Directors. Besides participating in several regional committees and serving within various regional leadership positions, Tim has authored and co‐authored several publications and served as a presenter at regional and national meetings. He received his Master of Science in Management with a specialization in Research Administration from Emmanuel College, Boston, MA. He is also an adjunct instructor within Thomas Jefferson University’s Clinical Research program, responsible for their Grants and Contracts course. He also earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from Temple University, Philadelphia, PA. Before establishing a career for himself within this profession, Tim also acquired a wealth of experience working within the association management and financial services industries
