Lori Ann Schultz

Lori Ann M. Schultz has worked in higher education research administration and operations for 30 years, working throughout the grant lifecycle, including preaward, postaward (financial and non-financial), and compliance. Lori also works on evidence-based policies, using data to forecast and plan strategies for the research enterprise, and to evaluate policies and processes. She currently holds the position of Senior Associate Vice President, Research Administration at the University of Texas at San Antonio. In this role, she oversees the central sponsored projects office and contracting team (preaward and non-financial postaward), college research administration teams, research integrity and security, conflict of interest, human subjects, animal care, and all financial activities funded by the Office of Research.

During her tenure at the University of Arizona, Lori served in progressively responsible positions in research administration, starting with being a postaward financial accountant in 1994. She then moved to preaward before taking on promotions into research leadership positions. As Assistant Vice President, Research Intelligence, she was responsible for marshalling research administration data and faculty activity data into systems that visualize faculty collaborations and impact. She also worked to influence federal policy and its impact on grantees and changing institutional policies to provide better work experiences for postdoctoral researchers. As Senior Director of Research Partnership Services at the University of Arizona, Lori’s role was oversight, management, direction of the UA Sponsored Projects & Contracting Services unit, Export Control, Research Administration & Compliance Training, Research Administration technology tools, data and policy.

Lori is a long-time member of NCURA and is currently a member of the NCURA Board of Directors. She has served NCURA in many roles including the Select Committee on Global Affairs, Traveling Faculty for Fundamentals, Annual Meeting Program Committee, and many years of session and workshop presentations. Lori won the Julia Jacobsen Distinguished Service award in 2021.

Lori has received funding from Southern Arizona Biomedical Commission for compliance and ethics training, and most recently received an NSF GRANTED award with the University of Kentucky to hold the first ever Research Analytics Summit in 2024.

Lori has conducted presentations and training on research, data, and technology topics at the AAU, APLU, NCURA, SRAI, FDP, COGR, and Educause. Lori is on the Board of Directors of ORCID.

In addition, Lori has many years of experience in research, software development, non-profit board leadership, and data management and analysis. Lori received both undergraduate and graduate degrees from the University of Arizona.
