This International Neighborhood website is dedicated to providing a broad and thoughtful range of professional material and information NCURA members want to see included in a web-based international resource. Below is an overview of what you will discover at this, the newest of NCURA’s Neighborhoods. View subcommittee members.
Dear Colleagues,
We cordially invite you to have a look on our conference programme for the Dublin Conference and we hope to meet you there.
EARMA 2012 to Focus on EU’s Horizon 2020 Programme
The 18th annual conference of the European Association of Research Managers and Administrators (EARMA), taking place from 8th – 11th July 2012 in Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland, will include a keynote address by Maire Geoghegan-Quinn, European Commissioner for Research Innovation and Science, on “Horizon 2020 and a New Beginning for a European Research and Innovation System”.
The conference will focus on the upcoming Horizon 2020 programme and other European developments and is being hosted by Trinity College Dublin (TCD) on its campus in the heart of Dublin city and by the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT)
Over the three days, parallel sessions and workshops will examine four themes: Grants management of collaborative research; Legal aspects and governance, ethics and compliance issues; Recognition of the profession: research office services and professional development; and Research strategies and policies.

We are pleased to announce the conference Destination Europe: Your Research and Innovation Opportunities, which will be hosted by the European Commission on January 20th 2012 in Cambridge, Massachusetts (US).
This high-level Conference will showcase Europe's vibrant and attractive science, technology and innovation culture; the excellent funding opportunities Europe provides for career development; and the challenging positions in world-class environments offered by European industry and research organisations. When we look at the picture of all of the opportunities available, both at national and European level, including the attractive opportunities for women researchers, it is truly impressive.
Presentations by high-level speakers, representing some of the major funding organizations and research intensive industries in Europe, will be illustrated by testimonials from researchers who have taken advantage of the opportunities offered to develop their careers in Europe.
Speakers will include: Maire Geoghegan-Quinn , the European Union Commissioner for Research and Innovation; Professor Tim Hunt, Nobel Laureate; Professor Dr. Matthias Kleiner, President of the German Research Foundation (DFG), Professor Donald Dingwell, Secretary General of the European Research Council and many other inspiring leaders in the field.
The Conference is the first of a series of events planned for the USA and has been organised by the European Commission and the European Research Council, in consultation with EU Member States and the Strategic Forum for International Cooperation.
The Conference will take place back-to-back with the MIT European Career Fair at which over 100 European companies and research organisations participated last year. The target audience is researchers of all nationalities based in the US, opinion leaders and representatives from leading US universities; multipliers from European Union and national networks working in the USA, and representatives from the science diplomacy community and the media.
All are welcome. Participation is free but registration is obligatory since numbers are limited by the size of the venue. For programme and full information please visit: destinationeurope.teamwork.fr

First, we hope the section titled Public Square will provide a meaningful venue where NCURA members can communicate observations, raise questions, offer opinion, and share best practices around the broad domain that is international research administration. The International Neighborhood will regularly offer such commentary by fellow research administrators and managers located in the USA and other countries.
Second, the International Resources portion of the Neighborhood provides valuable links to a comprehensive directory of domestic and international organizations that impact the work of research administrators around the world. Each link includes a brief descriptive narrative outlining the mission of each organization included in the directory. This depth and breadth of information is absolutely essential for NCURA members to use this resource with ease and confidence. This directory is possibly the best of its kind available to the international community of research administrators. If you have international web addresses that might be included in this section, please send them to Denise Wallen. who manages this section of the Neighborhood.
Third, the Events section of the website includes a complete list of NCURA events traditionally appearing in each of NCURA’s Neighborhood websites. Perhaps the best way to locate internationally hosted conferences, meetings, workshops and professional development courses is to visit specific websites of host organizations in the International Resources section. For example, if you click on European Association of Research Managers and Administrators (EARMA) it provides a range of training and continuing professional development opportunities offered throughout Europe. Likewise, if you click on the International Network of Research Management Societies (INORMS) you can locate information on the recent Congress – titled Managing for Impact: New Approaches to Research and Innovation Management – that will convene at the Cape Town International Convention Center (South Africa) from April 2010. NCURA is a member of the INORMS Network.
Fourth, the Library section includes a list of professional resources essential to any growing library of value to international research administrators. This on-line library will, of course, need to grow – which is our intention – so please share valuable resources with colleagues by sending them to Denise Wallen.
The fifth component of the Neighborhood is titled Career Center, which includes professional opportunities on file with the National Council of University Research Administrators. Similar opportunities can be found by visiting specific host organizations in the International Resources section.
Though new resources may be added in the future, this is where we start. Please let us know your thinking, but first please remember to join the International Neighborhood listserv by completing the box to the left. Welcome!
To the Members of the International Neighborhood:
Denise Wallen, Chair of the International Neighborhood, has asked me to introduce to you a newly formed committee within NCURA - the NCURA Ambassador Corps. The Corps has been created as the next stage of NCURA's commitment to increasing its members' knowledge of international research administration by facilitating cooperation and collaboration between NCURA and research managers, organizations and funding agencies outside of the United States.
The Ambassador Corps will be comprised initially of eight members who have been recognized by the NCURA Board of Directors as having significant experience in representing their respective institutions and/or NCURA on international matters. The members are: Steve Hansen - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville; Norm Hebert - Brown University; Diane Horrocks - Idaho State University; Kathleen Larmett - NCURA; David Mayo - California Institute of Technology; Kim Moreland - University of Wisconsin - Madison; and Denise Wallen - University of New Mexico who, as Chair of the International Neighborhood, acts as an ex-officio member.
One of the Corps' primary responsibilities will be to oversee the very successful NCURA-EARMA International Fellowship Program, one of the first projects created by the NCURA International Commission, which the Corps now replaces. The Corps will solicit program ideas from NCURA's international members to assist in the development of education topic suggestions to NCURA program committees. In fact, a future NCURA podcast planned for this September and sponsored by the International Neighborhood will be developed by the Corps; it will address the topic: What U.S. Research Administrators need to know about Collaborating under Framework 7.
The NCURA office receives requests each year from a number of research managers from outside the US who seek information about NCURA, or who are looking for contacts within U.S. universities with whom they can discuss specific aspects of research management. The members of the NCURA Ambassador Corps represent a wide range of universities in both size and specialty, who will be able to quickly respond to these requests.
We are very excited about this new initiative and we believe that it has great potential for strengthening the relationships between NCURA, its members and our international colleagues.
Sincerely,
David Mayo
Chair, NCURA Ambassador Corps
