NEW International Region
In response to the growing international constituency in NCURA, the Board of Directors approved the creation of NCURA’s International Region in February 2011, with José Mário Leite, FUNDAÇÃO CALOUSTE GULBENKIAN, Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência serving as the first International Region Chair.

Hello
I am Jose Mario Leite, deputy director of Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência at Oeiras Portugal and chair of the NCURA International Region.
It is a great privilege to welcome you.
Unlike all the others, this region has, a very specific particularity that is at the same time a difficulty but, also an advantage for its operation: the multi-nationality and multiculturalism of the members. Of course, this means that to make this a strong community, additional effort of all members must be given. The distance, language, tax and accounting systems are at the same time a constraining factor for collaboration but, also a greater value and a source of enrichment for all.
The simple existence of an international region allows the necessary and sufficient opening to allow and extend our influence and the possibility of cooperation between all members of NCURA and managers of science worldwide. Not only in developed countries but also in other non-developed mainly emerging countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia. I hope that we can take as an example the Portuguese XVI century history and spread all over the world the cooperation and dialogue among all professionals that gives their best for the development of science and to contribute to a better world.
I'm sure that I can count on the involvement, collaboration and cooperation of all members to enhance my commitment and also the necessary understanding for my failures and minor results.
You can count on me and on my desire of work in an open way to all and each of you.
