Peer Reviewers

NCURA maintains a roster of nationally recognized research administrators who have demonstrated expertise in research administration. Some reviewers have competency in the pre-award operation while others in the post-award area. Reviewers have expertise in institutional policy development and implementation as well as a departmental focus.

NCURA members apply to become a peer reviewer. After thorough discussion, the NCURA Board of Directors selects and appoints those applicants who will become peer reviewers. Each reviewer completes an in-person training program (with additional periodic training) prior to participating in their first peer review.

Objectivity is one of the core characteristics of the NCURA reviewers. The reviewers do not judge nor criticize while conducting reviewers. Reviewers bring expert and professional insights to the assessment process. They balance the existing functions of an operation, with institutional environment and history, current resources, and future directions.

Reviewers recognize that the Standards are a guide and not every Standard is expected to be in place in every sponsored programs office. They bring that understanding, as well as an understanding of best practices that may assist a sponsored programs office to enhance their operation and services.

Peer reviewers hold confidential all aspects of the review process. They recognize the importance of and the integrity of the review and hold confidential all aspects: background materials, discussions, and the written report. That integrity is reflected in the Reviewer's professional conduct and adherence to confidentiality that respects institutions, operations, and the individuals involved.

NCURA reviewers also understand the sensitivities that accompany any peer review-whether it is from staff concerns, internal institutional politics, or stresses or pressures with different stakeholder groups. Reviewers take extreme care with discussions and written reports in order to preserve and respect various perspectives.
