Julie Cole

Julie Cole is the Director of Research Costing Compliance (RCC) at Duke University.  RCC is a somewhat unique office, providing comprehensive training and continuing education across the broad spectrum of research management – Principal Investigators, Business Managers, Grant Managers, and Procurers/Lab Managers.  In addition, RCC serves as the monitoring office for financial research compliance for the entire university, providing extensive monitoring of financial transactions, trending reports for financial compliance oversight, and policy/process development.

Julie has over thirty years experience in research administration and has served in multiple positions and in a broad diversity of universities.  Her primary professional focus has always been on developing new initiatives to promote research growth and compliant management, and her current work at Duke University serves as a capstone to a long and productive career.  Julie has served in director’s positions at Wake Forest University, the University of Florida and East Tennessee State University, among others.  Her experiences provide a blend of expertise in smaller institutional issues as well as the challenges confronting large research universities.  While at Wake Forest University she served as a member of a statewide task force on research development, and founded the Winston-Salem Science and Technology Roundtable, a mechanism for bringing university researchers, venture capital and research industries together.

Julie has served as Southern Section president and later as president of the Society of Research Administrators International, where she also co-chaired the Education and Professional Development committee for three years.  She has served as a member of the Professional Development Committee for NCURA, and has presented extensively at NCURA regional and national meetings, as well as at special NCURA conferences.

Julie earned her CRA as one of the first CRA groups to take the exam.  She holds a BS in History and an MA in Administration of Higher Education from Appalachian State University.  She is the author of a chapter, Training and Education, published in Sponsored Research Administration: A Guide to Effective Strategies and Recommended Practices in July, 2010 by NCURA and Atlantic Information Services, Inc. Julie was also a co-author of the Role of Research Administration, first edition, also published by NCURA.
