Brian Squilla

Brian Squilla is currently the Chief of Staff, Dean's Office; Jefferson Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University.  In his position, he is responsible for supporting activities related to the educational, research and clinical missions of the College as defined by the Dean.  He is also responsible for coordinating activities related to strategic priorities such as creation of new departments, institutes and centers, and promotion of inter-institutional alliances including providing administrative leadership for major programmatic grant initiatives.

For the last 11 years until 2011, Brian was a departmental administrator.  Formerly, he was the Director of Administration and Finance in the department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania where he was mainly responsible for the direction and supervision of the day-to-day operations of the department’s administrative office. This includes budgeting, monitoring, reconciling, and developing reports for all departmental funding (endowments, gifts, and technology transfer) and overseeing all sponsored research in the department including pre and post-award processes.

His department’s sponsored research budget was approximately $50 million annually. Approximately 85% of their budget came from federal sponsors. The remaining 15% consisted of sponsored research agreements, clinical trials and foundation grants. Pathology was also responsible for the operations of 7 core facilities (re-charge centers) with a composite budget of $6 million annually.

Brian is an active member of the National Council of Research Administrators (NCURA) and has presented at numerous seminars on the departmental level. Brian has also served on the Financial Research Administrator’s (FRA) 2007 & 2010 conference program committee, faculty for NCURA’s Departmental Research Administration traveling workshop, NCURA TV’s 2008 workshop “Managing Cost Issues”, the program committee for the 50th and 51st annual meeting (2008 & 2009), co-chair of the Pre-Award Research Administration conference (2010) and served on the 2009 NCURA Board of Directors.
