Regents’ Professor of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering
School of Chemistry and Biochemistry
Georgia Institute of Technology

Educational Background:
B.S. 1959 Brooklyn College Chemistry
Ph.D. 1963 Univ. of Maryland Chemistry
Postdoctoral Associate 1963-64 Univ. of Maryland Polymer Chemistry
Postdoctoral Associate 1964-65 Georgia Tech Physical Organic/Polymer Chemistry

Current Fields of Interest:

Dr. Liotta’s research activities involve both synthetic-organic and physical-organic chemistry. His major interests lie in the areas of structure-property relationships, kinetics and mechanisms of organic reactions, homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis (phase transfer catalysis and fluorous biphasic chemistry), molecular thermodynamics and solution theory, phase equilibria, reactions and processes in supercritical and near critical fluids, effect of high pressure and temperature on solution behavior, separation processes, development of environmentally benign chemicals and chemical processes, synthesis and properties of new and novel polymeric materials, and the development of new solvent systems for chemical processes.

Dr. Liotta's research group presently consists of three graduate students and two post-doctoral associates in the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry and twelve graduate students and four post-doctoral associates in the School of Chemical Engineering (joint with Prof. Charles A Eckert).

During the past forty-two years, Dr. Liotta has been invited to present over three hundred and seventy research seminars at various universities, colleges, chemical companies, symposia, professional meetings (ACS), Gordon Conferences, etc. in North America, Europe, Africa, Central America and Asia.
