Maryland
Antoinette Lawson, Director, Office of Research
Administration and Advancement, University of Maryland, College

Mary E. Schmiedel, Associate Dean for Research Administration and Director, Office of Sponsored Programs, Georgetown University
Program Level: Basic
The foundation of a sponsored project is the ideas conceived by
principal investigators which are then further developed into
competitive proposals for external support. As research
administrators, we play a key supportive role in assisting principal
investigators to navigate proposals through various stages in their
development, review and submission to external sponsors.
Further, research administrators are challenged with the ever
changing rules and regulations governing proposal processing. In
this workshop, we will explore the myriad of pre-award
requirements surrounding proposals through the submission and
award acceptance phases of sponsored projects life cycle. Also, in
this workshop overview, we plan to highlight how to identify
funding opportunities, explore the proposal preparation and
submission processes, examine some key elements of award
negotiation and acceptance, and introduce participants to various
compliance areas. Key concepts will be applied through the use
of case studies.
Learning Objectives:
- Participants will be introduced to resources for identifying
funding opportunities.
- Participants will examine the various elements of a proposal.
- Participants will explore proposal submissions through award
negotiation and acceptance.
- Participants will be introduced to various compliance areas
pertinent to pre-award administration.
