Garry Sanders was named Vice President for Research and Sponsored Programs Operations at the Research Foundation of SUNY in New York State in July 2009. He was previously director of sponsored research and compliance for the Ordway Research Institute, Inc., a not for profit biotech. Mr. Sanders has served as a senior research administrator and consultant at research institutions for the past 30 years. He has served as assistant vice president for research and director of the office for sponsored programs at the University at Albany, SUNY, specializing in international, public health and high technology research grants and contracts. In this capacity, he also administered the University's research compliance operations and supervised its pre-award grants management office.

His experience includes negotiating and managing contracts and grants with federal and state agencies. His expertise includes developing and coordinating proposals of all sizes, including large, complex multi-institutional grants and contracts; training research staff on business and research compliance matters.

He previously served as assistant director of the office for research and project administration at the University of Rochester, and as grants manager for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, the National Eye Institute, and was a presidential management fellow with the United States Department of Health and Human Services.

Mr. Sanders is an active member of NCURA, having served on its board of directors, chaired of its professional development committee, and was a chair of the first NCURA Leadership Development Institute program. He received the Council's Distinguished Service Award in 2005. He was a member of the NIH general clinical research center advisory committee and was an instructor in the Drexel College of Medicine professional graduate program in research management.

He received his B.A. at the University of Buffalo (SUNY), and M.P.A. from the University at Albany (SUNY).
