Gary Smith is the Sr. Administrative Director for Research at the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). His primary responsibility is to assist the Senior Vice President for Research in a broad range of financial and administrative activities that support the operations of the MGH research enterprise. Before moving to his current position, he was the Administrative Director for Research in the Department of Surgery at MGH. Gary has been employed at MGH for the past 7 years. Prior to joining MGH, Gary was a Research Administrative Director for a group of departments at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston. Before moving to Boston, he worked 10 years in a central office role for the Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene, Inc. in Albany, New York.
Gary has been an active member of NCURA since 1999. He is a frequent speaker at both NCURA National and Regional meetings. He served as the Chair of Region I, Region I Treasurer, participated in Regional Program Committees, and is a current faculty member for the Region I Essentials in Research Administration. Gary also Co-chaired the 2006 NIH Regional Seminar on Program Funding and Grants Administration held in Boston. The meeting was co-hosted by MGH and Harvard University. Gary received his Bachelor's Degree from Siena College in Loudonville, NY and his Master's Degree from Sage Graduate School in Albany, New York. He currently resides in Nashua, New Hampshire with his wife Leisel and two sons, Jacob (7) and Nathan (4).
