NCURA Gives Back to Benefit Reach for College! Featuring Paul Mecurio

Continuing its history of charitable giving, NCURA has selected a nonprofit organization from our adopted hometown of Washington, DC, to benefit from a special fundraiser at this year’s very special Annual Meeting. On Monday evening, past Annual Meeting and last year’s video “drop by” comedian, Paul Mecurio will return to provide an evening of hilarious entertainment at this special fundraising event. Tickets are available here.

The recipient of this 50th Annual Meeting event is Reach for College!

Reach For College LogoReach for College! is a nonprofit organization working in the metropolitan DC area to help low-income, underserved students get to college. Though 88% of low-income students come into high school saying they want to go to college, only 30% end up enrolling from the DC schools. This tragic gap is due to a lack of resources in the schools. Counselors are supposed to serve 350-500 students and their time is often taken up with tasks that take priority over college counseling. Further, since most students will be first-generation college students, they have no one at home with experience to help them through the complicated college access tasks. Reach for College! works to close this gap by offering an in-school, curriculum-based class that students take as part of their regular school day and get credit for. We train a teacher from the school to teach the class. This class, which is given free to the schools, walks students through career exploration, SAT prep, college selection and application, financial aid, and skill-boosting so they will be ready for college. This year we are working with 800 students and that number is set to double in the 2008-2009 school year. 75% of Reach for College! students go to college and report that the class was significant in helping them know what to expect and be prepared to succeed. An investment in Reach for College! students utterly changes the trajectories of these students’ lives and of the families they will create by putting them on a path to economic stability and breaks the cycle of poverty from which they’ve come.
