Pete Koch has over 30 years of professional business experience, primarily sponsored research leadership, management, operations, assessment, and planning experience spanning pre-award, post-award, and compliance. He currently serves as Executive Director, Facilities & Planning in the College of Medicine at the University of Cincinnati.  From 2012 - 2017 he served as Associate Dean for Research Operations at the College.

Prior to July 2012, Pete was Assistant Vice President of Sponsored Programs at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center (CCHMC), a nearly $2 billion stand-alone 501c3 hospital, affiliated by agreement with the University of Cincinnati, where he oversaw both the pre-award and post-award sponsored programs operations. This included the pre-award Sponsored Programs and Contracting offices and the post-award Sponsored Programs Accounting/Costing and Compliance groups.  Over a span of more than 20 years, Pete planned, established, and continuously managed an evolving sponsored programs infrastructure in an enterprise where external funding grew from less than $10 million annually in 1990 to over $150 million the year he left, and where activity spanned a range of projects from basic science through clinical trials. Pete’s involvement included establishing effective processes, developing and implementing a comprehensive set of compliant policies, and developing and presenting numerous leadership, faculty and administrator training.  Pete was part of the senior management team of the Cincinnati Children’s Research Foundation (CCRF), an operating unit of the hospital that manages all research activity and the professional clinical component of the Department of Pediatrics faculty.  In that capacity, he regularly interacted with the Office of Clinical and Translational Research, the Center for Technology Commercialization (Tech Transfer) and the Office of Research Compliance and Regulatory Affairs.  He served as the Sponsored Programs Compliance Officer on the institutional Integrity and Compliance Council and established a regular institutional presence at SRA, NCURA, and the Council on Governmental Relations.   He was a member of the project management office of the institution’s PeopleSoft/Oracle Financials system, represented the CCRF on the institution’s chart of accounts redesign team, and served as the functional lead for the initial design and implementation of the Grants modules in 2005, and several subsequent modifications/upgrades.


Pete was appointed to the inaugural group of reviewers for the NCURA Peer Review Program in 2007 and has served on many Peer Review teams since, as both member and Team Lead.  He was also on the program’s oversight committee from its inception though 2016.   He was appointed to the NCURA Fundamentals of Sponsored Project Administration Traveling Workshop faculty in 2014, and served in that capacity through 2017. 


Pete holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Administration degree, with a concentration in Finance, from Xavier University, and a Master’s in Business Administration from Northern Kentucky University.  He is a current member of the Society of Research Administrators, where he helped establish the Ohio Chapter, served two terms as Chapter President, and was the first recipient of the Chapter’s Founders Award. He has been a member of the National Council of University Research Administrators since 1993.  Pete was a charter member of the Grants Opportunity Project of the National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions (now the Children’s Hospital Association).
